Lately I've been trying to get in a better reading groove. I go through spurts of reading a ton and then not at all. I am not sure why this is. Recently, I just read a book for my book club. The title is Fever 1793, it is by Laurie Halse Anderson.
On my goodreads account I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed it. This may make me sound stupid, but I had no idea there was an outbreak of yellow fever in Philadelphia in the late 1700s. I found it interesting to read about. It was about a girl who lived in Philadelphia with her Mother and Grandfather. They owed, lived, & worked at the coffeehouse. Then yellow fever breaks out in the area. Some people fled the city & others decided to stay and stick it out. The people who stayed suffered much hardships.
I did my own research on yellow fever after finishing the book. The book was pretty accurate. It made me think about living life like that. People were dying and starving. One instance in the book, the girl was completely out of food and went to her dried out garden. She was able to find a few potatoes for supper. Can you imagine? We are so blessed to have the things we do!
I am able to cook dinner each night for my family. We have running water, we are healthy, and so many more things. I enjoy reading and the different perspectives I am able to see life through.
This book was a quick read. It had a little bit of a love interest. I thought the main character grew as a person throughout the book. I would recommend this book. It was more on the lighter side. Some books can be draining emotionally to read, but I thought this was a good mix. I felt for the characters, but I didn't feel drained reading it. Does that make sense?
